This is a five-day course.

Join master boatbuilder Jeff Reid as he takes students through the process of planking a 13′ Chamberlain Dory Skiff from John Gardner’s classic book. This course will start with a put together backbone sitting upright on saw horses. The focus for the the 5 days will be spiling, shaping and hanging planks. Learning all the nuances of what makes lapstrake construction unique. Time and attention will be spent on beveling planks for a watertight hull, cutting gains for the transition to smooth stem, and proper fastener selection and use. Students can expect to learn rivets, ring nails, screws and clench nails throughout the week. Once planking is complete – building and installing the sheer assembly will be demonstrated . The inwales, outwales and breast hook will be completed locking in the shape and sheer line of the Dory.  For those that have felt intimidated by the idea of tackling a traditional lapstrake build or are curious how to execute upright construction, this would be the perfect class…with subject matter elevated even more by an instructor with years of experience and a supportive teaching style.
