This is a six-day course.

Spend a week with Clint Chase building the new speed pram designed just for WoodenBoat School. This for all the people that want get into building their own powerboats at home. The class will focus on glued plywood construction, fitting parts inside a small boat, and include discussions of the design elements for motor craft. Materials used will be 9mm and 6mm plywood, and the construction method is wood chine-screw-and-glue. Clint will cover epoxy measuring and application, laminating and prepping wood parts, sawing, bending, and fitting parts, as well as, evaluating curves for fairness and accuracy. You will also learn about hand tool selection and use, especially drills, drivers, planes and hand held routers.

The design parameters are as follows:

  • Low horsepower (low cost motor and gas consumption), but good turn of speed.
  • Capacity for two adults or an adult and two kids.
  • Focus on motoring only (not a Swiss army knife of motor, row,  and sail).
  • Light enough to move easily into the bed of a pickup truck.
  • Cost effective in materials (thin plywood, simple setup).
  • Use the Atkin designed Chatterbox a baseline to start the design.
