Jose Hernandez-Juviel

JOSÉ HERNÁNDEZ-JUVIEL was born in Cuba and came to the U.S. as a young lad. In college, he started sailing which led to a fascination for knotting and fancy knotwork. By the turn of the century, he had started rigging traditional sailing vessels. This was a hobby that soon became a second career. Around that time, he became a member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers (IGKT). He has since rigged a variety of vessels, from dinghies to working on the USS CONSTITUTION (“Old Ironsides”). In addition, he has taught classes in rigging, marlinespike seamanship, fancy knotwork, and ropemaking. He also worked for several years as a sailmaker for Nathaniel S. Wilson, Sailmaker. José presently has a rigging loft, Sou’Wester Rigging, LLC., in Edgecomb, Maine. He lives there happily with his lovely wife and three cats.
