Join seasoned wooden boatbuilding instructor and certified marine surveyor Pat Mahon for a unique course that combines a professional approach to surveying a boat with hands-on restoration techniques.

Take one or both weeks of this class that focuses on restoring two great boats in the WoodenBoat School fleet. WE 3 and SKOOKUM are both classic, plank-on-frame 12 ½’s. While both are in great shape for their age’s (86 and 81 respectively), they need a little help.

Week 1 will start with a full survey of both boats that will culminate in a plan of work to be done for the remainder of week 1 and 2. Week 2 will predominantly be restoration. Work could include: repairing/replacing broken frames, re-caulking, fixing a transom, repairing/fabricating new interior structures, checking/replacing fasteners, etc. While this course does not focus on paint or varnish, the topics will be discussed as it relates to the projects. A lot of work will get down in these two weeks, but don’t expect to be re-launching the boats before the lobster bake on Friday! Both restorations are likely to take several seasons of classes to complete.

While staying for 2 weeks is ideal, we recognize that it just doesn’t fit everyone’s schedule. We are trying something new this year by offering this course with the option of taking one or both weeks. Signing up for both weeks will get you a small discount.

Please select the correct option below for week 1, week 2 or both.
