Sailboats & Seascapes in Acrylics
The Maine coast painted in acrylic and mixed media.
- Kaitlyn Metcalf—September 8–14
Note: This is a five-day course ending Friday evening.
Join Maine artist Kaitlyn Metcalf for a stimulating, fun week working with acrylic paints and mixed media and creating integrated scenes within the context of nautical charts and other mixed media materials. You’ll begin by exploring how artists incorporate sailing vessels and seascapes in their work. Students will discover the local waterfronts and sketch ideas for what they want to paint. Once an image has been decided on, Kaitlyn will guide students through the layout within a chosen chart or paper, and then the actual painting will begin.
You will learn how to render accurate proportions, build dimensional form, and convey drama through paint as you create your own unique coastal Maine-inspired paintings. Kaitlyn will also demonstrate how to properly mount a chart and paper to a panel, prep the surface, and paint your image with dynamic range using both acrylic paints and mixed media. Each day will begin with the exploration of a new acrylic technique and end with helpful critiques from the day’s progress.
The course is designed for all levels of acrylic experience. While some knowledge is helpful, it is not necessary. Come ready to bring variation, more dynamic color, light and life, and the excitement of maritime culture to your easel! This course is scheduled to coincide with the annual Windjammer Sail-In held at the WoodenBoat School waterfront, which is sure to provide inspiration for your painting.
