WINDJAMMING ON BOARD THE
LEWIS R. FRENCH

Cruise and explore the coast of Maine.

The schooner LEWIS R. FRENCHPack your duffel bag and join us for a truly different educational experience aboard the LEWIS R. FRENCH, the oldest schooner in the Maine windjammer fleet. We’re very excited to have the opportunity to work with Capt. Garth Wells and crew aboard their 65' schooner, a familiar and romantic sight along the coast of Maine. With no engine on board, the FRENCH carries over 3,000 square feet of canvas and has proven to be a great sailer, having won the Coaster class of Maine’s Great Schooner Race five of the last six years. As students in this course will learn, the FRENCH makes an ideal home and classroom for a week at sea. Life aboard is relaxed and informal. Each meal is a feast. Upon arrival on Sunday, you will be absorbed into the guest crew of the LEWIS R. FRENCH and oriented to the ship herself and all safety procedures. As she gets underway, everyone will have the chance to immerse themselves in the routines of life aboard a traditional sailing vessel. Throughout the week you’ll cruise the clear waters of Penobscot Bay, sailing during the day and anchoring each evening in a quiet harbor. An overnight visit to WoodenBoat Publications and School in Brooklin has been scheduled for mid-week. There will also be time to go ashore, visiting other coastal villages and exploring islands.

Student participation in the work of sailing a traditional vessel will be the most important part of this unique experience. Capt. Garth Wells and his crew will work hard at presenting each individual with an educational adventure that promises to go beyond what one might expect. There will also be plenty of time to relax each day with a good book, new friends, or just watching the coast of Maine slip by. The choice of how you spend your days under sail at sea is always yours.

WoodenBoat School and Capt. Wells extend a warm invitation to you to join us on board the LEWIS R. FRENCH to share the pleasure and excitement of cruising the Maine coast. Circle your calendar, find that duffel bag, and call today to reserve a berth!
