ON BOARD BURMA
- MICHAEL McMENEMY — AUGUST 17–23
In WoodenBoat No. 97, Michael and Debbie McMenemy wrote a wonderful piece on designer R.O. Davis and the refinement of the motorsailer. BURMA, designed by Mr. Davis in 1950, is one of the boats featured in their story and your classroom for this exciting week. The article opens, “While many yachts provide their owners with exciting and comfortable cruising, a well-designed and well-built motorsailer is perhaps one of the most secure and pleasant types of vessels for ocean passagemaking or extended coastal cruising. The comfort and convenience of a powerboat and the seakindliness and poise of a sailing hull are the primary advantages of the motorsailer.” We are very pleased to invite you on board BURMA for a memorable five-day overnight cruise with owner/captain Michael McMenemy.
The course on the 58' BURMA will focus on learning the basic elements of motorsailing as distinct from powerboat or sailboat cruising. The week will consist of daily cruises along the Maine coast within a 200-mile cruising distance, utilizing sail and power in true motorsailer fashion. In addition to vessel operations and management you will experience motorsailer cruising techniques using the latest in electronic navigation as well as basic piloting and boat-handling fundamentals, including docking and maneuvering heavy vessels. You will also learn the essentials of navigating in fog.
Part of each day will be devoted to basic training in large-size vessel systems and operations. Students will gain a basic understanding of fuel system management, electrical system management, and all engineroom operations and management. You’ll learn what makes this type of vessel tick and how to get the best from her.
Motorsailing design and inspiration are based on combining the best attributes of sailboats and powerboats, providing the most comfortable and safe cruising solution available. Everyone spending this week with Michael on board this remarkable vessel will experience why many say motorsailing is by far the most comfortable way to travel at sea.
Tuition: $1350
Note: Participants should have some experience on small or medium-size cruising boats.
