ELEMENTS OF COASTAL KAYAKING I
Skills, gear, and common sense.
ELEMENTS I
- ELIZABETH EHRENFELD — JULY 6–12 (for women only)
- BILL THOMAS — JULY 13–19, July 27–AUGUST 2
- STAN WASS — AUGUST 24–30
- MIKE O’BRIEN — AUGUST 31–SEPTEMBER 6 (over 40 crowd)
Nothing, absolutely nothing, conveys the joy of being afloat quite so purely as a kayak. Thus, we offer you five excellent opportunities to learn the art of sea kayaking! Explore the islands of the Deer Isle Archipelago during the day and return home each evening to a great meal and a comfortable bed. This is coastal touring at its best!

In this elementary course, instructors will cover a variety of subject matter: selecting an appropriate kayak; reviewing safety procedures and necessary safety equipment; transporting kayaks; practicing various paddle strokes; discussing rescue methods; navigation; and better understanding weather and sea conditions. Our focus throughout each course will be giving each student the confidence and skills to safely pursue the sport of sea kayaking.

In a series of day trips, you’ll explore some of the most spectacular parts of the rocky Maine coast. Our instructors, Mike O’Brien, Elizabeth Ehrenfeld, Stan Wass, and Bill Thomas will call upon their years of experience as kayak instructors to provide answers to your questions about wind and wave. To enjoy these courses you should be in good health (although our instructors assure us that the course will not degenerate into an athletic contest). No previous kayaking experience is required except in the Elements of Coastal Kayaking II course with Stan Wass.
To best accommodate our potential audience, students may choose from the following courses: for women only, for interested individuals over 40 years of age, and as a general co-ed group. This whole week promises to be good fun and a great education.
Tuition: $650
Note: Kayaks, paddles, sprayskirts, and lifejackets will be provided by the school, but students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own if so desired.
