ELEMENTS OF COASTAL KAYAKING II

A hands-on manual on equipment, techniques, safety, navigation, and trip planning.

ELEMENTS II

We are offering COASTAL KAYAKING II at the request of individuals who are looking to gain more skills, further understanding of gear, and spend more time on the water along the stunning coastline of Maine. With the help of instructor Stan Wass, you can fit a year of experience into a week of focused work.

Stan will review and strengthen strokes and braces—as well as?teach new techniques to handle rougher conditions. Surviving while afloat is all about developing “water smarts”. Rescues will be done in the ocean, after they have been reviewed in the warm waters of a local lake, and you can try a roll if you have the interest. Navigation will take on a new level of difficulty, and hopefully we will get to practice in the fog.

Students will leave with many new kayaking techniques, a stronger respect for different paddling conditions, and confidence to get to the next level.

KAYAKING II QUALIFICATIONS

Becoming a kayaker takes time, and it takes work. To ensure that you not find yourself “in over your head” in our KAYAKING II course, we ask that you have the following qualifications:

  • You must paddle at least 3 hours a week during the two months leading up to the class. It does not need to be on the ocean. The local mill pond will do.
  • You must have taken a formal paddling class either at WoodenBoat School or the equivalent.

Please note that the instructor will contact you prior to your final acceptance in our Elements of Coastal Kayaking II course.

Tuition: $650

Note: Kayaks, paddles, sprayskirts, and lifejackets will be provided by the school, but students are welcome and encouraged to bring their own if so desired.
