JIM McGUIGGAN, inventor of the McGuiggan Clamp (see WoodenBoat No. 193), is a machinist of the old school. Jim started in the machine shop at Hyde Windlass in 1937 working as an apprentice on turret lathes and drill presses. During the next 30-plus years he became a master machinist working on all the different tools found in a complete machine shop. Hyde Windlass Co. was famous for their anchor windlasses, ship deck machinery, capstans, and steering gears. Jim worked on all of these and more, including special, intricate machining for various nonmarine industrial companies. In 1961 Bath Iron Works purchased Hyde Windlass. Jim continued on with BIW as a master inside machinist until his retirement in 1988. Since then he has kept busy volunteering his time and expertise at various nonprofit marine related organizations such as the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine. In addition, Jim ran a small machine shop servicing the local commercial marine industry, fixing propellers and propeller shafts.
