Despite growing up on a dairy farm inAuburn, Maine, JERRY STELMOK became intrigued with the grace and ability of wood-and-canvas canoes at an early age. Attending a boatbuilding program at Washington County Vocational Technical Institute in the early ’70s gave him the opportunity to learn the craft of traditional canoe building. For over 25 years now he has been building original and modified E.M. White designs as Island Falls Canoe in Atkinson, Maine, and has taught canoe building in many classes across the country. He is the author of Building the Maine Guide Canoe and coauthor of The Wood & Canvas Canoe.
