DICK DEVOE has boating experience scanning 40 years. As a teenager growing up on Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, Dick raced Beetlecats, International 110’s and Herreshoff ‘S’ boats. Years later while living in Florida during the 1970’s, Dick had his share of racing experience. For four years, he crewed on an Irwin 38' in the Midget Ocean and Senior Ocean racing circuits. His love of boating has led him to explore the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, Block Island and Long Island Sounds, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Adriatic Sea. Somehow, between sailing, Dick managed to spend 30 years as a field artillery officer in the Army retiring in 1997. Before his retirement from Fort Meade, Maryland, Dick was a member of the Annapolis Naval Sailing Association and served as boat captain of a Navy owned Hans Christian 43' ketch. While sailing for the ‘Navy’, he earned the highest ANSA skipper certification for seamanship. In the summer of 2001, he joined the WoodenBoat School staff as our Assistant Waterfront Manager. Recently, Dick formed his own company which is an approved USCG course for individuals interested in obtaining their Captain’s license. Dick lives on Amelia Island, Florida.
