Like most of our instructors, DAVID JACKSON grew up in and around boats, shops and the water. Growing up bi-coastal and mentored early by his father, he started his professional career in 1972 apprenticing with Ralph Lowell and Aubrey Marshall at Hiram Lowell and Sons in a museum setting at Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. With help and encouragement along the way from John Gardner, Lance Lee, and Roger Taylor, Jackson set shop in Anacortes, Washington as Freya Boat Works building and repairing boats from 1975 to 1993. Surveying followed naturally from repair. Meeting and taking a course from Giffy Full in 1983 at the WoodenBoat School in Brooklin, Maine was a revelation, and by 1995 David was a Certified Marine Surveyor with the National Association of Marine Surveyors. Based out of Anacortes, Washington, Jackson works full-time providing professional marine survey services to individuals, corporations, insurance companies and banks, and looks at pleasure and commercial vessels. In addition to surveying, David is a licensed master, founding member of the Anacortes community rowing club OARS; founding member of the Pacific Challenge Seamanship Competition; and co-leader of Crew 4081 with the beautiful 26′ longboat ELIZABETH BONAVENTURE.
