THE ART OF CARVING A DUCK DECOY
Learn the techniques and thought processes involved in woodcarving.
- Bob Schwinger —July 4–10

The practice of using decoys to lure ducks and other waterfowl dates back many hundreds of years. Native American Indians were masterful in their ability to survive in the wilderness with very primitive means, and could use just about anything to create replicas that resembled the birds or game that they were hunting. Today, duck decoys have been elevated from functional hunting essential to a highly prized and collected American folk art. Antique duck decoys regularly bring thousands of dollars at auctions nationwide and reside in many prominent collections and museums.
Of course, who can resist having a few duck decoys in their home, especially if handmade by you! In this course, prize-winning master carver and instructor Bob Schwinger will guide students in gaining a better understanding of carving decoys and how to increase the skills associated with this wonderful art form. When Bob first learned how to carve, most woodcarvers were making hunting decoys with smooth bodies and the details painted on. These were very simple carvings made realistic with paint. Today’s carvings are textured to be even more realistic. Every detail is carved into the wood before paint is applied.

The object of this course will be to show the process of developing a subject decoy, carving it skillfully, and to share various resources and techniques for finishing and decorating. Bob will cover, demonstrate, and practice step-by-step procedures of carving via the most direct route for beginners to learn, and to improve the abilities of those who have previous carving experience. Students will learn what tools to use, carving techniques, what types of wood are most suitable for carving, and how to keep tools sharp. Bob will also discuss mounting techniques and how best to display your hand-carved works.
Each step the student takes in carving is a development and a step upward in learning to perfect the skill. By week’s end, everyone who participates in this course will head out the door with a bunch of new skills, one or two beautiful carvings, and a keen appreciation for the art of carving duck decoys.
