AN INTRODUCTION TO STEEL WELDING

Techniques to support the amateur and professional boatshop.

More is required to run a successful boatbuilding operation than just woodworking skills. Sometimes it is necessary to deal with steel and other metalwork. Many shop facilities need to fabricate steel components and weld support structures to aid in the business of building boats. In this introductory course with master craftsman Mike Reilly, the instructor will cut through the confusion and related fears associated with the heat and bright lights of the welding process. With over 40 years of experience in the field of design, fabrication, and welding, Mike will share some valuable tips and tricks of the trade that will have you quickly up and running and feeling confident to tackle standard welding and shop fabrication projects.

Structural steel cutting, notching, grinding, drilling, fitting, tacking, stick welding (shielded arc), MIG welding (continuous feed)“these are just some of the techniques that you will learn and actively practice during this fast-moving course. Students will participate in the design, fabrication, and on-site installation of steel structures that will be used in the WoodenBoat School shops and at the waterfront. Mike will also teach the basic process for cutting, drilling, and welding stainless steel, which is found on many boats of all types. Students will learn what to look for when welding so you can feel confident knowing your welds are correct. You’ll practice pipe welding and test your welds for accuracy. A variety of welding methods and weld wire types will be demonstrated.

Mike likens first-time welders to folks trying hot pepper sauce for the first time. “They really can’t appreciate the quality of the flavor, because they just can’t get past the hot!” And so it is with welding: “People can’t appreciate the Zen-like quality and science of melting two pieces of metal together because they just can’t get past the blinding, hot light.”

Each student will leave this week of activity with the basic knowledge to start and finish his or her own steel fabrication project. The skills learned will expand your level of confidence and possibly open new doors of opportunity for your future boatbuilding ventures. Besides, Mike loves to tell stories, so not only will you learn to weld, but you’ll be entertained as well. Oh, and don’t forget to bring your favorite hot sauce.
