BUILDING THE ASA THOMSON SKIFF

An introduction to building small craft.

Asa Thomson SkiffThe Asa Thomson skiff is a classic example of form following function. Everything follows—a specific boat designed for a specific purpose in a specific area. For New Bedford, Massachusetts, sailors who had visions of reaching across Buzzards Bay to the Elizabeth Islands for a summer picnic in Quicks Hole, the flat-bottomed skiff was the answer. It provided a stable platform when grounded on the beach, and, unlike round-bottomed boats, it was easy to float again without wading into deeper water before climbing aboard.

Like New Bedford boatbuilder Asa Thomson, John Karbott’s name implies exacting standards and fine workmanship in the boats he builds and repairs. We invite you to join John in our shop this week as he guides his students through the fundamentals of traditional wooden boat building. From lofting to the final interior joinerwork, John will share his years of experience and helpful hints as students construct two of these lovely 11′3″ rowing skiffs.

As the skiffs take shape, your instructor will lead discussions and demonstrations on boat plans, lofting, wood selection, marine plywood, fastenings, glues and adhesives, tool sharpening, paints and finishes, and the like. The relative simplicity of this design makes it a perfect choice for the first-time boatbuilder. And with John’s able guidance and easygoing manner, individuals who take part are in for a memorable experience which will serve as the foundation for any direction the boatbuilding student desires to go.

Tuition: $750
